Where to Travel With Kids on a Budget
Posted by business | travelling | Posted on May 24th, 2010

Of course you can travel just about anywhere with your kids on a budget. Like any travel experience on a budget you need to research and plan well to make the most of your travel dollar. Many places, however, are family or kid friendly and will throw in added extras for the children. So whether you intend traveling at home or abroad, look for places that will cater to your family’s needs.
RV trips are a great way to travel on a budget. In fact, traveling with a car is almost essential for families. It is usually cheaper than buying rail passes or catching taxis everywhere. But more importantly, it gives you that ‘door to door’ freedom that is necessary when traveling with kids.
If you are traveling overseas, have you considered staying in a hostel with your family? This is a much cheaper option than staying in hotels and many hostels are family friendly and have no age limit (except in Bavaria where you can’t be older than twenty six). You can request a room with enough bunk beds to accommodate your family and you can cook your meals in the communal kitchen. Huge savings to be made!
In the USA there are many places to travel with your family on a budget. Consider these options:
1. Camping. The cheapest option around for any travel adventure. Many campsites have activities for kids and if you don’t like the idea of staying in a tent, many places have cabins to rent that are still cheaper than a hotel room. Camping gets you up close and personal with nature and gets the kids outside and running around.
2. What about spending some time at a Working Farm or Dude Ranch? Look around for reasonably priced holidays at these destinations and you will find plenty of activities and atmosphere for kids and adults alike.
3. Head to Disneyland in off peak season for big savings.
4. The same can be said for traveling to Hawaii. Check the packages available in low season and see how affordable it is.
5. You’ll also find some excellent deals in traveling to Mexico. Go for all-inclusive resorts, especially in the low season.
What about if you want to travel overseas? Where are some good places to take the kids on a budget?
* Although Australia is a long way away and can be a bit pricey to get there, it is a very child-friendly place with lots of cost saving adventures to be had for the kids. Australian off peak is different from North America so do some research.
* Europe can be done on a budget with kids. Pick your destinations with the kids in mind. Get them involved in your itinerary. Stay in hostels and travel by car. You’ll be amazed at how much you save and how much you see.
* Some island resorts are very child friendly. In Fiji there are resorts where children under twelve stay and eat for free. Do your research!
* How about a family cruise? Cruises are great because they are all-inclusive, cater for families and you get to explore lots of places. There are some good family package deals to be found with most cruise companies.
So get planning and get packed. Plan your family vacation and check out the deals available. Going off peak is the best way to save money. If you are going to take the kids out of school buy them a journal so they can record their experiences. It’s amazing how much they’ll learn by traveling with their family.

Hi, I go on long road trips each year, and we do not have a lot of money either. I have learned that with time and research you can have great trips on little money. The biggest most important tip I can give you is ALWAY contact the Chamber of Commerce and the Visitors Center for their free travel packets. Why, because they send you coupons, maps and they know of the good travel deals!! The coupons they send save you TONS of money!! Very helpful on food. I have learned not to be embaressed to use the coupons, these places what you to check them out. Also using the visitors center to plan your trip is like having a free travel agent. Call or email them with questions, these people are locals they know what to do. If you only have $500 tell them say I need help with a 3 day trip on $500. Trust me this is their job, they want you to spend the money in their town. I cannot stress enough how much money I have saved because of this!
Okay you live in Nashville which is a great place to be located. Look at a map there are tons of places that are only 5-8 hour drive for you. How about Memphis, St. Louis, Springfield IL or MO. Gaitlinberg, Savannah, Destin, Atlanta, they are all pretty close and every single one of these places has a ton of stuff to do. If it is your first road trip find a city that is about 5 hours away, research the place find out what there is to do, again contact the visitors center. Also be sure to research some of the other towns along your route, you might find some interesting places to stop and see things. When planning a trip on a budget you have to think, do you like to camp? What outdoor things do you like to do? Do you like walking/driving tours? When you are researching you have to think about free fun things that are in the area. Walking is free ect….
Okay here are some sites that I like….makes me think outside the box when looking for fun things to do:
http://www.roadsideamerica.com
http://www.listsofbests.com
http://www.westernroadtrips.com
frommers.com
AAA.com —–You do not need to be a member to use their site. Your acess is limited but, still a very helpful site!!!!
http://maps.google.com
http://www.mapquest.com
http://www.randmcnally.com
http://www.byways.org —-This site is also wonderful! Be sure to check it out, run by the national department of transportation. Has maps, list of great highways and good "side" and "backroads" to take I have learned that if you can it is better to travel small highways and local roads you get to see a lot more than just driving on the interstate. You also get to go through towns you may have never known about. Some of the best things that I have done on road trips have been from places off the beaten path! You reallly get to experience more and you stumble upon the greatest things!
http://www.roadfood.com
http://www.gasbuddy.com
http://www.gaspricewatch.com
Be sure to use the gas sites to help make your budget more accurate. A lot of times on road trips people under estimate the cost of the gas.
Well I hope that helps you. I agree you need to do some traveling and experience new things before the kids ect.. I am in my late 20's and I have been doing roadtrips since I was 18. Again with a little time and effort you will have a great trip. I start planning at least 2 months a head of time. This allows time for all of my visitor info to get here. Remeber coupons, coupons, coupons! Oh yeah keep the souveners to a small amount. Trust me 5 years from now you won't remember most of them. Just find one or two things that really respresent the trip. and you like a lot! Have a great trip I know you are going to have a blast!
Mach weiter so, Benny!!! <3
Ohh definitely Puerto Rico! That is why they say "explore beyond the shore" because it is so much more than just a beach vacation. Also PR is a US commonwealth so if you are a US citizen you dont need a passport & its fairly safe to rent a car & travel around the whole island alone. There is ton of rich culture in PR too, there are always festivals going on. San Juan is a big city with so many historical & govt sights to see. El Morro Fort is a must see. San Juan has tons of restaurants, casinos, nightlife, cultural sights & beaches. You will never get bored. Also the Bacardi Factory gives free tours & you can buy rum there. They also have flavors that arent sold in the US. You can take the ferry from San Juan to Catano.
Also outside of the city there is plenty to see & do. I suggest renting a car & explore the island. You can get anywhere within a few hours or less. You can go to el Yunque rainforest. You can hike the trails & see unque animals & plants. You can also swim in the refreshing waterfalls. There is also a bioluminescent lagoon & a bioluminescent bay nearby. The water glows in the dark as you kayak through it. You can go to Camuy Caves visit the worlds largest radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory. Ponce is a cool colonial city in the south with great sights & Guanica dry forrest nearby. Rincon on the west is known for surfing & whale watching in the winter & gorgeous sunsets. The central area has beautiful mountains & off the east coast you will find Culebra & vieques islands with the most amazing white sand beaches & great snorkelling. You can do any watersports, play golf, fish, horsebackride on the beach, surf, jetski, snorkel, bike, hike, go boating, ATVing, or anything you can imagine in PR. However the only all-inclusive hotel in PR is the Copa Marina.
I think this will be the perfect time for them to talk, and I am willing to say, I bet they make up. Sometimes things are meant to work out. This, I feel was meant to be. I would love to hear back, because I feel everything is going to be OK.

Try Craigslist. You can sign up and post a message under housing. See below.
Der Lipgloss ist ein bisschen viel
Aber das ist eben Beeeeenny
Plenty of places in the suburbs of DC that are close to the Metro (subway) stations.
I think there's a Comfort Inn near Alexandria…near the Van Dorn Street Metro station (about half-mile from the metro). Go online to one of the travel sites and look. Be sure to book your room early to get the best price! If you wait till late, the prices go up (just like airfares).
They have a shuttle van that will take you to the Metro an also pick you up when you call them to return to the hotel.
Right now the rates are about $140 a night for a group of up to 4 people.
ey geil das er trotzdem weitermacht mit seiner musik und sich nich aufgibt
ich glaube an ihn
Boston is a very small and walkable city. The subway system is excellent and pretty easy to figure out. There are short-term passes available, $9 for one day, $15 for 7 days. http://www.mbta.com/fares_and_passes/passes/
South Station is right on top of the Red and Silver Lines, and only a few stops from the other lines so you can get most places in Boston fairly quickly. Most of the historic areas are linked by the Freedom Trail. For small kids, the Children's Museum is quite near South Station. There's also a walking tour of the Freedom Trail geared to kids, but you can get a map and do it yourself for free. The Aquarium and Science Museums are wonderful, and both are on the T. The Harvard Museums have a couple of good ones for kids. The USS Constitution is wonderful.
Food on a budget — Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall is a massive and unusual food court. Chinatown has many good inexpensive places. Generally the ethnic places (Indian, Thai, Chinese, Mexican) have good cheap food if your kids will eat it.
Also the cheapest harbor cruise is the Water Shuttle from the Aquarium/Long Wharf to the Charlestown Navy Yard (where the USS Constitution is). Fabulous views, $2.00 each or free with a subway pass.
If you live in a MA town (and maybe CT or RI), check your local library to see if they have passes to any museums.
Everybody (but me) loves the Duck boats.
When people talk about "hostels" in europe, they are not talking about dormitories – those are "youth hostels". A hostel is a lower budget lodging, much like a pension, a modest, motel-like place, generally privately owned, and clean, comfortable, with doors that lock, and you have no strangers coming into your rooms…and, btw, even the youth hostels have family rooms in some locations. It actually sounds like a hostel is exactly what you should be looking at. They also, are often right in the centers of towns, so they tend to be cheap, clean and convenient. THey don't really have motels in Europe, because no one uses cars the way we Americans do. If you are that many, you might want to check out driving, but remember, Gasoline in Europe is around $4 – 7US per gallon…oh, wait, with the way our gas prices are going…that's not that much!
but then you have to think about parking, and getting in and out of lots, and finding your way around towns, and parking costs a lot!!! I paid around 30 – 40€/day in Spain last year. Still, I would probably go with the trains, they are quick and clean and convenient and simple to use.
In addition to the whole pension/hostel situation you could look into apartments. They are generally clean and can be centrally located. Even if you only cook breakfast, they can be perfect for that, and larger and more comfortable than many rooms. Just search the city in question, and there should be all sorts of options for lodging.
I would probably use both cities as a home-base and explore some of the smaller towns outside by train. I think renting bikes to do the Tuscan countryside is an excellent idea! I don't know how hard you can push the smaller child, though.
I would definitely try to spend a week in each city, using Florence as a home base for exploring Tuscany. You don't really need more than two days in Florence to see the basics, but a full week for Rome, for sure. (Oh, and you don't want to be driving in Rome at ALL!!! They have a reputation as the world's worst drivers for a reason…red lights, etc. are considered suggestions, and the last thing you want is to get stuck in one of those huge roundabouts, without knowing where to get off. If you DO decide to rent, DON'T take the car into the city, garage it outside of the central part of town, near both a bus stop or metro station and a highway, that way you avoid driving in the city.)
How about Fantasyland?
We see this every day in this forum: Everyone wants to visit here, and is looking for “cheap/affordable and safe". However, such a place just doesn’t exist; the two terms are mutually exclusive. It's all about supply and demand: If it's in SoCal, then it's not going to be cheap to begin with. If it's a safe area, then it's more expensive. Average price is going to be in the $150 range in summer. $55? This ain't Calgary, buckaroo. It's LA. $55 means you sleep with Templeton the Rat and his cockroach and bedbug friends. And hope the hookers in the next room don't keep you awake all night. Sorry, that's just the financial reality here in LA.
LA is probably the only city where you DON'T want to stay downtown.
Since LA is so spread out, there is no single place that is close to EVERYTHING. Most people who come here tend to stay in Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Anaheim. In Hollywood, I recommend the Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity Hotel, or Holiday Inn Walk of Fame, all near Hollywood and Highland. Another one is the Best Western Sunset Plaza. In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced. In Anaheim, I recommend the Howard Johnson (HoJo) Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. There is also a nice place in Burbank called the Best Western Media Center, very close to Warner, NBC, and Universal Studios.
Benny!!!!!! <3
Schade dass er nich gewonnen hat! Er wär auf jedenfall erfolgreicher geworden als Daniel Schuhmacher!
Aber wahrscheinlich wird Benny auch so berühmt!
